What we're looking for
We are looking for a highly motivated Master’s Thesis student to join our Grants & Innovation team at Smartex, working at the intersection of European innovation policy and deep tech strategy to bridge EU funding programmes with real-world R&D and product execution. In this role, you will support the identification and structuring of European and national funding opportunities (such as Framework Programmes and PT2030) and contribute to how they are leveraged to drive innovation and long-term growth. This position is ideal for someone interested in EU policy, innovation ecosystems, and strategic funding, and how public investment translates into tangible technological impact in a deep tech environment.
Responsibilities
- Identify and analyse relevant European and national funding opportunities (e.g., Horizon Europe, EIC, PT2030) aligned with the company’s innovation strategy.
- Develop understanding of the full lifecycle of funded innovation projects, from opportunity scouting to proposal, execution, and reporting.
- Support analysis of funding requirements and eligibility criteria, ensuring alignment with strategic and technical objectives.
- Contribute to the preparation of grant proposals, including technical narratives and budget structuring.
- Assist in managing complex processes involving financial, legal, and compliance requirements of funded projects.
- Help improve internal processes related to grants management, reporting, and innovation governance.
Skills & Experience
- Currently enrolled in a Master's in management, economics, international relations, public policy, or related fields.
- Strong analytical and structured problem-solving skills.
- Interest in European innovation policy, R&D funding, and public funding mechanisms.
- Ability to work with complex, structured documentation and regulatory texts.
- Strong attention to detail and ability to manage multi-stakeholder processes.
- Comfortable working in a fast-paced, cross-functional environment.
- Ability to work independently and in a collaborative, cross-functional environment.
- Excellent communication skills in English.
